I don't actually know why Apple are bothering. MS Office is the best program on my Mac. It does everything I could possibly want.. and more.
Exactly. Word is great. Yes, it's bloated, but as long as you realize that you're buying Word with no intention of using 97% of the features, the 3% of the features you DO use are perfect. I even think things are perfectly laid out (on Macs, not Windows), especially on Office 2004.
Again, I realize there is a lot of bloat, but I never really intended to use ALL the features anyway. I intended to use what I need, and Word does offer everything I need.
And I don't think Word is slow. No word processor is slow enough to bother me. And if you're right and it IS slow, then its not very noticeable, and so it isn't a big deal.

So what about pap smears, cancer detection, HPV detection, STD testing and immunization, sex education, and all the other things that don't have to do with popping out units that the GOP will also be killing?
Maybe we should also tell women that in the name of personal responsibility, they need to learn how to detect cervical cancer their own damn self. Maybe we should also tell a guy with Chlamydia that he should buy a chemistry set and invent his own damn cure.
Sounds like a bunch of services your family doctor or gynecologist would be capable of performing.
As for sex education, again, NOT THE JOB OF THE GOVERNMENT.
I am sorry I don't agree with the government giving these services as free hand outs to people who don't have health insurance or can't foot the bill.

Friday is usually the miscellaneous sessions day, when the less important (or popular I might say) sessions are held. Of course you can leave whenever you want but Friday is still a full day. I would plan on staying the entire day if you can. Leaving Saturday morning is best as you can relax on Friday :)
Last year, in the original schedule, all sessions on Friday ended before lunch and lunch was the last item on the schedule. During the week, they added a couple of repeat sessions in the first slot after lunch. But, still, all sessions were over by 3PM.
I don't expect Apple to post the full schedule 'till a couple weeks before the conference. (I agree it would be nice if they posted it sooner.)

I hope this doesn't come across as overly whiny, but it has been just about the ********* month of my life.
My dad died suddnely, totally unexpected, in his sleep on the 14th of last month, and I'm still crying about it. My grandmother (we were totally tight) died two weeks later. My sister's house in N.O. escaped total destruction, but she can't go back. My nephew flipped his Explorer - luckily he is OK. My partner's mother had heart surgery two days ago....
I need to get away for a couple of days, at not much expense, and away from hoarding crowds. Something fun, totally different and totally mind numbing. Can anyone give me ideas on a +/- 500.00 couple of days?
Just need to get away. :D

I drive 5000+ miles worth of road trips each year. AT&T 3G is available for maybe 5-10% of that, and EDGE is mostly useless otherwise. I use Navigon and it works great. A GPS program that relies on live downloads would be a comlete disaster for me.

Like a touchpad wouldn't it be possible for it to recognize what is a tap and what is just touching to the surface? i.e. it would only initiate a command based on a quick touch and release.

I agree with the iPad being the computer for normal people. Many people I know have no idea how to copy and paste files on a computer, how to install a program, or how to do more complex things that for me seem completely simple. Most people don't even want to bother with putting their files into folders and renaming them. I think that "normal" people (the average person) is not comfortable with all the features of a real computer. It's like putting someone who normally drives a car into an airplane cockpit.
Anyway, the iPad at the moment could not be my only computer, but even I would enjoy having it as a secondary device to carry around to lectures and other places. I won't carry my MacBook Pro with me unless it's absolutely necessary, as it's heavy, requires sitting down and only works for a couple of hours. An iPad on the other hand, can be used while standing, it can be given to someone else easily, anyone can use it instantly. I can't just hand my MBP over to someone like that.
I think the iPad is filling a gap in computing that no one has really thought of before: computing that doesn't take place at a desk, and that is easy and fast, and as Apple says "gets out of the way".
Maybe one day the iPad will be able to do everything a proper computer can (open most file types, allow communication between applications such as drag and drop from one app to the other, etc...) and then it will actually appeal to everyone.
